Dwight van de Vijver was born in Utrecht and raised in a Catholic family. As the son of a lawyer and a teacher, he learned from an early age the value of contributing to a safe and liveable society. He worked for many years as a community police officer in Utrecht and later became an assistant public prosecutor and inspector. “The people who are sometimes the hardest to love are often the ones who need it most.” During his eighteen years in the police force, this thought regularly guided the conversations he had with people from all walks of life. Dwight appeared in Bureau Onrecht on SBS6 and is the resident expert on 112 Vandaag.
Connection
In early 2018, Dwight won the public choice award for Young Civil Servant of the Year. Connecting people and approaching others without prejudice have been central themes throughout his career. As a presenter, Dwight aims to reveal the strength in what appears different or may even feel threatening to a familiar and safe environment. He also wants to create opportunities for people who are ready to participate in society again and help others understand why this benefits society as a whole. His empathetic approach makes Dwight a natural connector in any room.
EO Programmes
In 2019, Dwight created the four part documentary Geboeid: Terug naar de plantage, in which he explored his family roots in Suriname. The distinctive double “van” in Dwight’s surname symbolises his family history and inspired him to discover more about it. In 2020, the programme Ook hier portrayed Dutch citizens who regularly or even daily experience racism in the Netherlands. In autumn 2021, Dwight appeared in Drop It, a programme about weapon possession among young people in the Netherlands, and Welkom in... Containerdorp, for which he spent an extended period with people living on the margins of society. He also presented the series Uit de bak, in which four courageous men and one remarkable woman shared their experiences of imprisonment with Dwight. In 2022, Dwight competed in the television quiz De Slimste Mens.
