We live in a time when truth and lies, reality and illusion are becoming increasingly intertwined. Deepfakes add another dimension to this landscape. The term deepfake refers to modern AI software capable of creating new digital content, such as faces, images, videos, texts, human voices and other audio recordings. You can make people appear to do or say things they never did or said, or replace someone’s face in a video involving criminal activities. Deepfakes can be used to blackmail someone with fake pornographic material or to spread propaganda.
Until recently, edited hyper-realistic videos were largely the domain of Hollywood studios. That is no longer the case: today, anyone around the world can create them. We are moving from post-truth to post-reality.
It is important to remain alert to potential negative consequences such as blackmail, identity fraud, reputational damage, social unrest and geopolitical tensions. These issues are explored extensively in this keynote.
In this keynote, we look at deepfakes. Can we still trust our eyes and ears in the age of deepfakes?
In 2017, Jarno wrote the book The Digital Butler: The Opportunities and Threats of Artificial Intelligence. The trend is crystal clear: we have entered an era in which computer systems have become capable of learning independently, driven by increased computing power, better algorithms and rapidly growing amounts of available data. Intelligent systems learn from data, from themselves and from other systems. Artificially intelligent systems will provide us with insights, make predictions and act on our behalf. They can make observations and identify patterns in complex datasets, and provide answers to questions we did not even know we had.
Jarno discusses the major benefits, such as greater prosperity, efficiency and new insights, while also highlighting the downsides we cannot afford to ignore, including pressure on privacy, the labour market and the loss of human skills.
Imagine artificially intelligent software as a creative assistant, copywriter and video maker. It is possible. For the first time, this type of intelligent software enables us to quickly and easily generate entirely new content. Everything that can be digitised can be recreated digitally. Intelligent systems write texts that are increasingly indistinguishable from authentic content, generate endless amounts of images and videos, and create new music. AI systems will inspire us and help us create new forms of media. AI software as a digital idea machine.
Following the social media revolution, we are now facing a wave of opportunities created by synthetic media.
In this keynote, Jarno explores the future of content creation and human-machine creativity.
Machines help us explore the boundaries of our imagination. And that is where countless opportunities lie.
