About Merijn Tinga

Merijn Tinga (1972) studied biology at Leiden University and worked as a teacher before deciding to become an artist in 2001. He became known as a member of the artists’ collective KUT (Kunst Uitschot Team), which illegally placed large wooden sculptures in the Leiden region. As a passionate kitesurfer, he became increasingly frustrated by the amount of plastic he encountered in the water and decided to combine his passion for nature with activism. In 2014, he built his first surfboard from plastic waste and surfed 350 kilometres along the Dutch and Belgian coast. The Plastic Soup Surfer was born.

Merijn Tinga as a Speaker

Merijn is an energetic and passionate speaker who strengthens his story with impressive video footage and raw, honest reflections. He talks about his expeditions at sea, overcoming setbacks and persevering, and his fight against the plastics industry. His mission is to show that real change is possible when you dare to dream, take responsibility and seek collaboration. His presentations are flexible, suitable for a wide range of audiences and can be tailored to the client’s needs. Merijn also gives workshops on sustainable change, such as introducing reusable coffee cups in the workplace. He motivates participants with a powerful call to action and demonstrates what moral leadership looks like in practice.

Career and Expeditions

Merijn’s expeditions are symbols of perseverance. In 2023, he windsurfed 1,800 kilometres from Oslo to London on a board made from recycled materials, carrying English litter bottles found in Sweden as a protest object. In 2024, he continued the campaign with a journey from London to Paris, where he spoke with the mayor several days before the Olympic Games. His campaigns contributed to concrete results, including the introduction of a deposit scheme for small plastic bottles on 1 July 2021 and cans at the end of 2022. Together with Dirk Groot, he also developed Prullenbakkenteldag in 2024, which provided insight into the waste problem surrounding deposit collectors.

Using tens of thousands of litter photos collected through an app, he helped reduce the sale of highly polluting products. He was the first to use the desbewustheidsexploot, a legal document delivered by a bailiff to the CEOs of producers and retailers. In doing so, he connected activism with legislation and achieved measurable impact.

Book and Keynote Topics

In his book 'Tegen de stroom in', Merijn describes his fight against plastic pollution through the story of a spectacular expedition: using a self-built wind surfboard, he transports a plastic bottle that washed ashore in Sweden to the heart of power in London. He connects his adventures to themes such as personal responsibility, hope and perseverance. His talks explore four key areas: change management, leadership, people & society and sustainable impact. He demonstrates how creative action, collaboration and a strong vision can lead to meaningful change.

Sustainable Leadership and Impact

Merijn emphasises that sustainability is not only about technology or policy, but above all about people: their choices, beliefs and courage. His story is about overcoming obstacles, demonstrating moral leadership and continuing to move forward, even when things get difficult. He shows how individuals and organisations can make a difference by daring to act and persevering. His campaigns are a call for collective action, driven by conviction and determination.

Sessions

The multimedia presentation, as featured in the shorter version, is interrupted halfway through by an engaging quiz. Using Mentimeter or a show of hands, participants compete to test their knowledge of plastic pollution. The questions include personal challenges, surprising facts and fresh perspectives, creating an interactive and energetic experience.

This presentation by the Plastic Soup Surfer explores the question: “How can I, as an individual, make a difference?”

It tells the story of the Plastic Soup Surfer and how he gained influence through his expeditions and campaigns. The presentation features longer excerpts from four documentaries created around these campaigns and expeditions, including the raw, personal and challenging moments. The final two documentaries were also broadcast by National Geographic.

The presentation encourages the audience to reflect on their own values: What are your core values, and how do you act on them?

The 1,000-kilometer expedition of the Plastic Soup Surfer down the Rhine River on a board made from plastic bottles. During his journey along the Rhine, he confronts himself both physically and in his convictions.

A multifaceted film that tells the story of plastic pollution through interviews with experts. The documentary has been broadcast several times on National Geographic Channel.

Merijn has been campaigning against plastic pollution for over 10 years. Originally a biologist, he has extensive knowledge and experience in plastic recycling, innovation, politics and science. This expertise also makes him well suited to act as a moderator.

Merijn shows which steps you can take to overcome your own challenges, how to deal with setbacks and how to translate these experiences into your own work and leadership. He offers practical insights and inspiration on how to approach life.

Using his remarkable expeditions and groundbreaking campaigns as a common thread, he demonstrates how to take ownership of your work and personal development. Above all, he shows that one person can make a real difference.

“Plastic Smart” is the remarkable journey of one person who decides to take action. An adventurous journey that evolves into a battle against an entire system.

Plastic is everywhere. We are surrounded by it. We drink, eat and breathe plastic. And even if you make a conscious effort to separate your household waste, there is no guarantee that it will actually be recycled. Something is fundamentally wrong with the way we deal with plastic.

Just a few years ago, we paid little attention to this material. In a remarkably short time, plastic has become something we seek to ban, reduce and replace. How did plastic become such a major environmental problem? What role does it play in our throwaway culture? And how can the “plastic soup” become a catalyst for the transition towards a truly sustainable world?

Using exciting surfing expeditions and plastic campaigns as a common thread, Merijn takes the audience along on his journey. From storms at sea to the corridors of politics and the boardrooms of businesses. It is an adventure that begins with a record attempt on a surfboard he built himself from plastic washed ashore and develops into influential campaigns and strategic lobbying for measures that affect us all in our daily lives. It is a hopeful story that demonstrates that even one person can make a difference.

An engaging personal presentation about the role of plastic in our society. The storyline follows Merijn’s adventurous surfing expeditions and campaigns, which take him from the open water to boardrooms and the Dutch House of Representatives, where he works to make a difference.

The presentation ultimately addresses the question: What can you do yourself? Depending on the audience and objectives, this can be explored from the perspective of an individual or an organization.

Experience has shown that the presentation often raises many questions afterwards, precisely because plastic is so deeply embedded in our daily lives. Time can therefore be made available for an interactive Q&A, allowing participants to explore their own questions and challenges.
