About Ruud Gullit

Former professional footballer Ruud Gullit (real name: Rudi Dil), also known as the “Black Tulip,” began his career at HFC Haarlem before moving to Feyenoord. As captain of the golden generation, which also included Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard, he achieved numerous personal and professional victories. In 1988, he became European champion, was named European Footballer of the Year in 1987 and World Player of the Year in 1989, and was included in the FIFA 100 list of the greatest players in 2004.

 

Football Career

Ruud Gullit made his debut for HFC Haarlem in 1979, before moving to Feyenoord after three seasons. In 1985, Gullit joined PSV, where he enjoyed a highly successful period. He became national champion twice, was named Eredivisie Player of the Year and won the Golden Ball. Shortly afterwards, he moved to AC Milan, where Gullit formed the “Golden Trio” with Van Basten and Rijkaard. During his time at AC Milan, Gullit won numerous titles and awards, both as a player and with the club. After several seasons, Gullit moved to Sampdoria. Under his leadership, the Dutch national team also won the European Championship in 1988.

After eight years in Italy, Ruud Gullit moved to Chelsea, initially taking on a short-term role as player-manager. This was soon followed by coaching roles at Newcastle United and the Netherlands Under-21 team in 2003. In 2006, Ruud became manager of Feyenoord, but stepped down after one year following disappointing results. He subsequently coached LA Galaxy and Terek Grozny.

 

A Discovery About Gullit

Besides football, Ruud has another hidden fascination: the ancient culture of Egypt. It is a country he has always felt connected to, despite never having visited it. In his documentary series Ruud Gullit en de Mysteries van het Oude Egypte, released in November 2022, he takes viewers on a journey through the mysteries of ancient Egypt and reveals another side of himself.
