Willem often heard that his plans weren’t realistic. Kitesurfing was too difficult to learn, the risks too high for someone in a wheelchair, and there was no suitable equipment for people with physical disabilities. But Willem was determined: “After my motorcycle accident, I had to let go of many things, but one thing I could and would not accept was the idea that I could never surf again. I’m taking on this challenge and making my dream a reality.”
Kitesurfing
Today, Willem is among the world’s top kitesurfers, competing professionally with the international teams Slingshot and Wind Voyager. He travels the globe kitesurfing and inspiring others to reach their full potential. “If you truly want something, much is possible. Dare to dream—no wave is too high!”
Willem Hooft Foundation
Alongside his sporting career, Willem founded a foundation to make water sports accessible for people with physical disabilities. His next dream is to make kitesurfing a Paralympic sport, and he is well on his way.
In his book Geen golf te hoog, Willem shares his journey in a hopeful yet candid way. The book has received glowing reviews from notable figures such as Humberto Tan and Erik Scherder.
