Football Career

Björn Kuipers began playing football at Quick, but soon followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a referee. In 2005, he officiated his first match in the Dutch Eredivisie, between Vitesse and Willem II. From that moment onwards, he quickly established his reputation. He made his international debut in 2006, followed by his UEFA Europa League debut in 2007 during the match between NK Varteks and KF Tirana. After an impressive refereeing career that included FIFA tournaments, the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, he officiated his final match in 2021.

Entrepreneur and Author

Alongside his work as a referee, Björn owns two hair salons and several Jumbo supermarket franchises. His strong communication skills, thorough preparation and ability to make decisive choices are therefore not limited to the football pitch. He incorporated an important lesson from his career into his children’s book Respect, published in 2019, which offers pupils in their final year of primary school practical guidance on respect both on and off the pitch. Björn knows how to translate his experiences into an engaging message for any audience, covering themes such as motivation, effective leadership and entrepreneurship

These lessons translate naturally to the business world. His stories and insights engage audiences regardless of whether they are football fans or have any knowledge of the sport.

Alongside his career as a referee, Björn is also an experienced entrepreneur. He owns a Jumbo supermarket, which was named the best supermarket in the Netherlands in 2016, and previously owned several other supermarket branches. These experiences enable him to share an equally compelling perspective on entrepreneurship and leadership.
