Diederik Gommers grew up in Udenhout. After obtaining his VWO diploma in 1982, he studied medicine at Ghent University in Belgium. He later continued his studies at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he completed his pre-clinical degree in anesthesiology and graduated as a medical doctor in 1994. At the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, Diederik Gommers trained as an intensivist. In 2014, he was appointed professor by special appointment at Erasmus University Rotterdam, with intensive care medicine as his area of expertise.

Today, Diederik Gommers works as an intensivist and chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he advised the Dutch government and appeared in the media to explain the looming shortage of ICU beds in the Netherlands.
