Dr. Ernst Johan Kuipers was born on 14 December 1959 in Meppel, the Netherlands. He trained as a gastroenterologist and was appointed professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Erasmus MC in 2000, where he also became Head of the Department of Internal Medicine in 2006. He later became Chairman of the Board of Erasmus MC and held national and international positions in healthcare. In January 2022, he became Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Rutte IV cabinet, a position he held until January 2024. Throughout his various roles, improving the quality of healthcare, prevention and collaboration remained central.
