About Rachel Franse

For almost thirty years, Rachel Franse has worked behind the scenes of some of the most-watched current affairs talk shows on Dutch television. At the age of sixteen, she watched Sonja Barend address every imaginable taboo on her television programme Sonja Op Zaterdag. From that moment onwards, Rachel knew exactly what she wanted: to work on a talk show. At the age of 25, she joined Barend & Witteman with the words: “Prove yourself.” And that is exactly what she did. After Barend & Witteman, she worked on programmes including Pauw & Witteman, Pauw, Jinek and OP1, holding roles as a researcher, news editor, senior editor and, during the final four years, editor-in-chief.

For many years, Rachel was responsible for booking newsmakers and high-profile guests for these talk shows. Drawing on her extensive behind-the-scenes television experience, she understands better than anyone what makes someone a strong television guest. Why is one person invited to the table while another is not? And why are women still so underrepresented at those tables? Rachel has the answers.

De Slag Om de Gast

Rachel wrote about her work at Pauw & Witteman in the book De Slag Om De Gast: of de kunst van het verleiden. It offers a revealing look behind the scenes of a popular talk show, filled with anecdotes, practical advice and the occasional strong opinion.

100 Dagen Kanker

Rachel also wrote the book 100 Dagen Kanker. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent a treatment process that lasted exactly 100 days, despite initially expecting to be out of action for at least a year. She had never previously heard of this less intensive form of breast cancer. This inspired her to write the book in collaboration with Dr Emiel Rutgers of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam.
