About Jan Kees de Jager

Jan Kees de Jager obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Nyenrode University and three master’s degrees from Erasmus University Rotterdam: Business Economics, cum laude, Sociological Economics and Dutch Law. Alongside his studies, he founded the internet company ISM eCompany together with a fellow student. For his contribution to the success of this company and his efforts within the Innovation Platform and various ICT and innovation focused side activities, he received the ICT Personality Award from industry organisation ICT Office in 2006.

Prime Minister

After his work for the Innovation Platform, he was asked by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende to become State Secretary for Finance in the Balkenende IV cabinet. In his tax plans, he focused on stimulating entrepreneurship, simplifying taxes and making the fiscal system greener.

Emergency Budget

After the resignation of Wouter Bos, he became caretaker Minister of Finance in February 2010, before returning to this role in the Rutte I cabinet. With the euro crisis and challenging economic conditions, he found himself right in the middle of the storm. After the Rutte cabinet fell during negotiations on the 2013 budget, Jan Kees de Jager took the initiative to draw up an emergency budget in consultation with several parliamentary groups. This resulted in the so called Spring Agreement, in which a large number of spending cuts were agreed in order to comply with the European Union’s 3% norm.

ISM eCompany

At the time of his departure in November 2012, he was by far the most popular minister. He went on to work as a part time adviser to ISM eCompany, a much sought after speaker and independent entrepreneur. Since 2014, he has been a member of the Board of Management of KPN, where he holds the position of Chief Financial Officer.

He does not use a lectern, because he likes to walk across the stage and speaks without papers or a tablet. This natural and informal style of speaking creates calm and reduces the distance between him and the audience. The audience often includes many entrepreneurs who would like to ask him a personal question. Where possible, we always make room for questions. It is important that the audience can share their new insights and stories at the kitchen table that evening. After the lecture, there is also room to take a photo with him. Because of all these elements and choices, attending a lecture by Jan Kees de Jager is a special experience.
