Marcel van Roosmalen writes acclaimed books, articles and columns. He is known for his dry humour and cynical undertone. You may know him as a Druktemaker on De Nieuws BV on Radio 1, from the talk show Media Inside, which he co-hosts with Gijs Groenteman, and from the successful podcasts Weer Een Dag, Radio Romano and Radio voor de gewone man. Or, of course, from his #1 bestseller Theo Janssen: Marcel van Roosmalen op pad met de dikke prins (2019) and his columns for NOS Studio Sport and NRC Handelsblad.
Background
Van Roosmalen started a teacher training programme in Nijmegen, until he realised that he did not want to become a teacher at all. Fortunately, his first-year certificate gave him access to university, where he went on to study Dutch. When that did not prove challenging enough, he also tried studying History and Education & Culture. Eventually, he completed a journalism programme in the evenings and moved to Amsterdam, where he has worked as a journalist and writer ever since. Marcel began his writing career as a journalist at HP/De Tijd.
Writer
Alongside his work as a columnist, Marcel has written several books, including Je hebt het niet van mij - een tragikomisch verslag van een jaar Vitesse, which was awarded the Nico Scheepmaker Cup for the best sports book. His finest reports were published in Het is nooit leuk als je tegen een boom rijdt, Totaal, Totaal 2 en Totaal 3. In 2019, Het zijn de kleine dingen die het doen: Marcel van Roosmalen over zijn moeder was published. In 2021, Mijn legendarische moeder overleeft alles followed.
Columnist
Since 2011, Van Roosmalen has been a regular columnist for NRC and previously for Intermediair. His work also regularly appears in De Correspondent and the football magazine Hard Gras. For your event or organization, he is also happy to write bespoke columns.
