About Roanne van Voorst

Roanne van Voorst enjoys looking toward tomorrow. Will we all be vegans in the future? How will we deal with inequality in the world? Roanne provides audiences with insights into the day to come and sparks conversations about societal challenges.

Roanne as Speaker

In her lectures, she paints future scenarios and reflects on a more sustainable, human- and animal-friendly world. What will we eat? What kind of work will we do? What will our pets look like? How will we love? And how will we look back on today and our role in climate change? Roanne has spoken at major events such as Lowlands and the Happinez Festival, and her books have been published internationally.

From Author to Podcast Creator

Roanne van Voorst earned her PhD in anthropology cum laude in 2014. She writes fiction and non-fiction, works as a journalist, TEDx speaker, and podcast creator—including for Happinez as the “anthropologist of the future.” She is a board member of the Association of Professional Futurists and a researcher at the International Institute for Social Studies.

Her books also focus on the future. Once We Ate Animals (2022) explores the future of meat consumption, and You're Different From Us examines tomorrow’s migration issues. Through her books, she makes globally relevant societal topics accessible, reaching a wide audience internationally.

Sessions

Scientists agree that radical change is needed to prevent a climate catastrophe. Roanne explored what that change could look like and, importantly, how it would transform the world as we know it today. She spoke with dozens of historians, futurists, food experts, inventors, and trendwatchers to develop an anthropology of the future: What will we eat? What kind of work will we do? And how will we look back on the present time?

Will people continue in monogamous relationships in the future, or will polyamory become the norm? Will sex workers be replaced by robots? Will institutions like marriage still exist? If technology allows women to become pregnant without a man, what will happen to gender? Will the categories “male” and “female” even remain relevant? In this informative, thought-provoking, and sometimes hilarious lecture, “futurist anthropologist” Roanne van Voorst explores these questions.

Her insights are based on academic research as well as fieldwork. She has examined the artifacts of the future—from teledildonics to communal living, DNA matching, and 4D pornography—anticipating what future generations might encounter in intimate life. Roanne explains what these changes mean for the future of love, sexuality, and gender in society, in schools, and in the workplace.

In addition to being a speaker, Roanne van Voorst is also a moderator. Known as a “futurist anthropologist” and sustainability expert, she has conducted research around the world, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change. She brings this knowledge into her role as moderator, asking incisive questions and engaging audiences in a warm and often humorous way.
